The world’s biggest large hill is located in Willingen (Upland)

One of the biggest leisure attractions and landmark of tourism center Willingen is the Mühlenkopf Hill located in the idyllic “Strycktal”, a district of Willingen (Upland).

The ski-jumping hill has a long tradition, since 1995 it is scene of the International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cups.Year by year the sports spectacle with the world’s best ski-jumpers is a highlight in the world cup calendar which magically attracts the impressed ski-jumping fans.

The world cup stadium has a capacity of 35,000 fans. Almost one million spectators have already watched these high-class competitions on the world’s biggest large hill live on TV, which is broadcasted in all countries around the world. But also all year long the Mühlenkopf Hill offers an attractive leisure program and it is worth at least one visit.

The difference in height of about 120 m between out-run and the in-run tower is easy to overcome by our cable car without any drop of sweat. When driving at the side of the breathtaking arena by cable car up to the top at about 738 meters height above sea level you will get a good idea of the steepness of the site.

From this point many active vacationers start hiking tours to Willingen’s “Ettelsberg” mountain and the beautiful “Hochheide”, a nice legally protected area of erica plants on top of the “Ettelsberg” mountain.

Blick von der SchanzeWould you like some more? Yes, please! The in-run tower can be visited from the top of the cable-car station. A glass lift will bring you up to the highest tower of the facility, the so-called “Adlerhorst”. This futuristic glass dome definitely is an eyecatcher and the reason why the Mühlenkopf Hill is one of the world’s most modern ski-jumping hills. This is where the “eagles” are preparing for their flights. Entering an area where only top stars of the ski-jumping scene such as Martin Schmitt, Gregor Schlierenzauer or Simon Ammann are normally allowed to go make up the charm of it.

The difference in height between the out-run area and the in-run tower is 156 meters (almost as high as the cathedral in Cologne!). Just there visitors of the Mühlenkopf Hill have the most spectacular view. Inside of the functional building, constructed in 2004, café and restaurant “Aufwind” is located. The modern furnished bar with 80 comfortable seats and another 170 seats in the huge “Aufwind”-room and on the beautiful balcony will fulfill every wish with regards to refreshments, tasty food as well as coffee and cake.

Sportive honours (e.g. Biathlon Gold Medal of Petra Behle won at the Nagano Olympic Games in 1998) show the long and successful tradition of the SC Willingen with its 1100 members and many competitive athletes over the years.

Also our nicely decorated SC Willingen fan shop in the basement floor of the functional building is worth visiting. Right next to it the branch office is located.

All about mascots, pins, stickers, caps, jackets, shirts and many more are waiting for the willing sports fan. In addition to that, we offer information about the pre ticket sale for the world cup ski-jumping event, which usually starts in October, as well as important dates and events and guided ski-jumping hill tours. These tours always take place every Thursday and Friday at 2:00 pm. Within these 90 minutes experienced Ski-Club employers will tell many interesting facts about the hill and the fascinating sport ski-jumping itself and also have little anecdotes aside.

And if someone wants to be even more active, it is possible to participate in the shooting for visitors at the EWF-Biathlon-Arena and get deep into the fascinating biathlon sports.

For groups of at least 12 people Ski-Club Willingen offers a professional guided shooting with small calibre rifle on targets at a distance of 50 meters. But don’t be scared, no penalty laps will apply for a missed target… Information about the shooting can also be obtained in the branch office. Come to Willingen to the Mühlenkopf Hill and have fun with our leisure activities!
